Thai Temple Art and Architecture
Thai Temple Art and Architecture A typical Wat Thai (loosely translated as monastery or temple) has two enclosing walls that divide it from the secular world. The monks' or nuns' quarters or dormitories are situated between the outer and inner walls. This area may also contain a bell tower or hor rakang. In larger temples, the inner wall may be lined with Buddha images and serve as cloisters or galleries for meditation. This part of the temple is called buddhavasa or phutthawat (for the Buddha). Inside the inner walls is the bot or ubosoth (ordination hall), surrounded by eight stone tablets and set on consecrated ground. This is the most sacred part of the temple and only monks can enter it. The bot contains a Buddha image, but it is the viharn (...

Languages of Mexico
Languages of Mexico Mexico has an enormous linguistic diversity; apart from Spanish, the government recognizes 62 indigenous Amerindian languages as national languages. Spanish is the predominant language of Mexico and de facto official language. Nonetheless, the second article of the 1917 Constitution defines the country as a pluricultural nation, and recognizes the right of the indigenous peoples to preserve and enrich their languages... and promotes bilingual and inter cultural education . Other than the Nahuatl languages, no indigenous language of Mexico has more than a million speakers. Nahuatl is among the native American languages with the largest populations along with Quechua, Aymara and Guarani and some Mayan languages. A sl...

Howland Island National Wildlife Refuge
Howland Island National Wildlife Refuge Howland Island National Wildlife Refuge consists of the 455 acre (1.84 km²) island and the surrounding 32,074 acres (130 km²) of submerged land. The island is now a National Wildlife Refuge managed by the U.S. Fish and Wildlife Service as an insular area under the U.S. Department of the Interior. The atoll has no economic activity and is perhaps best known as the island Amelia Earhart never reached. Airstrips built in the late 1930s to accommodate her planned stopover were never used, subsequently damaged, not maintained and gradually disappeared. There are no harbors or docks. The reefs may pose a hazard. There is one boat landing area along the middle of the sandy beach on the west coast along with a crumbling ...

When to Go Brazil
When to Go Brazil The weather is worth considering when planning a trip to Brazil, as it can have a significant bearing on how you enjoy certain regions of the country. For example, the Amazon region is one of the world's rainiest places, making travel exceedingly difficult between January and May. Similarly, if you plan to go to the Pantanal, do so during the dry season. The rest of the year, roads are washed out and travel is a nightmare. The south has the most extreme temperatures and during the coldest winter months snow is even possible - but rare. During summer (December-February) many Brazilians are on vacation, making travel expensive and frequently booked out, and, from Rio to the south, the humidity can be oppressive. Howe...

Bird Watching in Faroe Islands
Bird Watching in Faroe Islands Binoculars and sunglasses should be part of the outfit of any visitor to the Faroe Islands. Sunglasses are needed when the brilliant sun bursts forth from the clouds; binoculars to enjoy the brilliant spectacle of birds soaring along the sea cliffs. During the long days of summer, the many cliffs on the northern and western coasts of the islands teem with huge flocks of birds. Cold arctic currents merge with the warm Gulf Stream in the waters off the Faroes, resulting in a particularly rich food environment for the nesting birds. Ornithologists have identified approximately 300 species of birds in the Faroes. Of these, 40 species are common breeding birds and about 40 are rare or irregular visitors. All have trave...

Music of Uzbekistan
Music of Uzbekistan Central Asian classical music is called shashmaqam, which arose in Bukhara in the late 16th century when that city was a regional capital. Shashmaqam is closely related to Azeri mugam and Uyghur muqam. The name, which translates as six maqams refers to the structure of the music, which contains six sections in different musical modes, similar to classical Persian music. Interludes of spoken Sufi poetry interrupt the music, typically beginning at a low register and gradually ascending to a climax before calming back down to the beginning tone. Endurance of listening and continual audiences that attend events, such as bazms or weddings, is what makes the folk-pop style of music so popular. The classical music in Uzbeki...
