There are a number of World Heritage Sites in Tunisia that comprise some of the famous tourist destinations in the country. Located in the northern parts of Africa, Tunisia was one of the important stops for all those merchants who trade through the Mediterranean sea. It is for this reason that Tunisia shared a close tie with the Arab countries. Some of the Arab traders later settled in the country. Prior to the arrival of these Arab traders, Tunisia was the base for the Phoenician traders and later was conquered by the Romans. You will come across a number of World Heritage Sites in Tunisia.
Tunisia World Heritage Sites comprise the majority of the various places of tourist interest in Tunisia. All these places represent the rich cultural and historical heritage of Tunisia at one go. You will be surprised to see the wide variety of World Heritage Sites in Tunisia. Be that the ruins of the ancient Roman city or a lake, UNESCO has meticulously listed the treasure trove in Tunisia. The Ichkeul Lake and wetland is one of the prime heritage sites in Tunisia. It is the major stopover point for hundreds of thousands of migrating birds, such as ducks, geese, storks and pink flamingoes. The importance of the Ichkeul Lake lies with the fact that it is the last remaining lake in a chain that once extended across North Africa.
Among the other important World Heritage Sites in Tunisia, the ruins of Carthage city deserves special mention. Established as a Phoenician trading post in the north of Africa, the city was built in 9th century by the legendary queen Elissa also known as Dido. One of the popular places for sightseeing in Tunisia, Carthage was built on a peninsula on the Gulf of Tunis. The medina in Tunis too is listed among the World Heritage Sites since 1979. Comprising one of the most frequented Tourist Attractions in Tunisia, the Punic Town of Kerkouane and its Necropolis was declared as a World Heritage Site in 1985.
