Madagascar, or Republic of Madagascar , is an island nation in the Indian Ocean off the southeastern coast of Africa. The main island, also called Madagascar, is the fourth-largest island in the world, and is home to 5% of the world's plant and animal species, of which more than 80% are endemic to Madagascar. They include the lemur infraorder of primates, the carnivorous fossa, three bird families and six baobab species. Two thirds of the population live below the international poverty line of US$1.25 a day.

Those who travel to Madagascar may swim in secluded coves, snorkel and dive the reefs, fish, water-ski, sunset gaze, collect shells, birdwatch, hike, trek, and go on nature walks in national parks and reserves.
Tamatave, Madagascar's major port, is home to the 697-acre Parc Ivoloina, which has nature trails, a zoo, and botanical gardens. There are 100+ lemurs and other native wildlife in the zoo and free-ranging on the grounds.

The west and southwest get searingly hot during the summer (November to March), which can make moving around a struggle, particularly if you're traveling by taxi-brousse (bush taxi). By contrast, the winter months in these regions are pleasant, with blue skies, cooler temperatures and essentially no rain. In the east and northeast be prepared for rain and overcast skies at any time, although rain showers don't usually last long during the winter months. The government of Madagascar, in collaboration with international partners, is launching a national health campaign to vaccinate more than 2.8 million children against measles and distribute more than 1.5 million insecticide-treated mosquito nets to prevent the spread of malaria—diseases which take the lives of more than 1 million African children each year.
