Spain Flag

Spain , or the Kingdom of Spain , is a country located in southwestern Europe on the Iberian Peninsula. Its mainland is bordered to the south and east by the Mediterranean Sea except for a small land boundary with Gibraltar; to the north by France, Andorra, and the Bay of Biscay; and to the northwest and west by the Atlantic Ocean and Portugal. Spanish territory also includes the Balearic Islands in the Mediterranean, the Canary Islands in the Atlantic Ocean off the African coast, and two autonomous cities in North Africa, Ceuta and Melilla, that border Morocco. With an area of 504,030 km², Spain is the second largest country in Western Europe and the European Union after France. Because of its location, the territory of Spain was subject to many external influences, often simultaneously, since prehistoric times and through the dawn of Spain as a country. Conversely, the country itself has been an important source of influence to other regions, chiefly during the Modern Era, when it became a global empire that has left a legacy of over 400 million Spanish speakers today. Spain is a democracy organised in the form of a parliamentary government under a constitutional monarchy. It is a developed country with the ninth largest economy by nominal GDP, and high living standards . It is a member of the United Nations, European Union, NATO, OECD, and WTO.

Playful Barcelona - Madrid
Playful Barcelona After Madrid, I took an overnight train to Barcelona. The largest city in Catalonia, Barcelona is distinctly different from Madrid. The city has Catalan, Spanish and often English signs. It is a city full of grand and unique Moderniste architecture, many of the sites are world heritage sites. The work of Gaudí is unforgettable. The tour of the magnificent Palau de la Música is not to be missed. The Gothic Quarter, or Barri Gotic, is an amazing jumble of medieval streets. Another great spot is Montjuic with the National Palace and the model Spanish Village. Definitely another one of my favourite places in the world.

Taste Catalan culture in Barcelona - Madrid
Taste Catalan culture in Barcelona For a short city break, Barcelona is hard to beat. Its close proximity to the UK and the availability of inexpensive flights makes it an ideal destination for a quick jaunt in the sun, as well as providing some great food, drink and culture. If you're only visiting Barcelona during a short break, perhaps over a weekend, you'll likely find the city can be overwhelming as there are so many things to see and do. On top of this, you'll also need time to relax as well as sample some authentic Catalan cuisine while and hopefully, squeeze in enough time to experience the city's abundant nightlife. As a result, it may be worthwhile planning an extra day or two in order to balance cultural with recreational pursuits and ma...
