This tour will enable the tourist to visit many of the most interesting historical and cultural attractions of Ethiopia which are found in the northern part of the country and four of them are registered by UNESCO as World Heritage Sites. Among these, tourists will explore the historic town of Axum (4th Century AD) with its stele which are carved from a single piece of granite stone, its churches, and the market. The other interesting place during this trip is a visit of the 11 rock hewn churches of King Lalibela which are cut out of a single rock in the 12th and 13th Century. These churches are unofficially known as the Eighth Wonder of the World. The Castles of Gondar (17th Century AD) and the island Monasteries of LAke Tana (16th Century) are also of interest to visit.

Day 1 - Arrival to Addis and transfer to your hotel.

Day 2 - Addis – Axum

Fly north to Axum – the most ancient capital of Ethiopia. This day, visit the Archeological museum of Axum, the Cathedral of St. Mary of Zion which is believed to be the last resting place of the Original Ark of the Covenant, and in the afternoon visit the famous ‘Stele field’ (4th Century AD and UNESCO World Heritage Site, the ruin palace and tomb of King Kaleb and King Gebre Meskel (5th and 6th Century AD) and the residence of the legendary Queen of Sheba (9th century BC). Day 3 - Axum – Mekelle

Drive 260 km to Mekelle – the regional capital of Tigray. On your way, cross the beautiful and historic Adowa mountains where Ethiopians had defeated the Italians in 1896. You will also visit Temple of Yeha (5th Century BC), and a small church museum which displays ancient stone inscriptions, manuscripts, crosses and crowns. O/N – Axum Hotel. (B, D)

Day 4 – Mekelle – Lalibela

Visiting the people of Tigre and Amhara at their villages and wondering the scenic Wollo Mountains, drive to Lalibela - home of the 12th and 13th century rock is carved churches of King Lalibela. O/N – Roha Hotel. (B, D)

Day 5 – Lalibela

After breakfast, visit the 6 churches which are found northwest of a small stream known as Jordan River and are called the ‘First Group of Lalibela Churches’, and in the afternoon, visit the second and third group of the rock churches of King Lalibela. These churches are Ethiopia’s top tourist attractions & UNESCO World Heritage Sites, and are unofficially regarded as the Eighth Wonder of the World. O/N – Roha Hotel. (B, D)

Day 6 - Lalibela – Gondar

Today, we will drive to Gondar which was the capital of Ethiopia in the 16th and 17th Century. On the way, visit the section of Amhara people who are known as Awra Amba and who are renowned for their interesting culture including equality of gender in sharing jobs, cleanliness, and hard working. Day 7 - Gondar – Bahir Dar

In the morning, have a sightseeing tour of Gondar which includes visiting the Imperial Castle Compound (17th and 18th Century AD and UNESCO World Heritage Site), the Bath of Emperor Fasiladas (the founder of Gondar in 1632), and finally visit the most beautiful church in Gondar – Debre Birhan Sillassie which is decorated with colorful wall and ceiling paintings of angles and stories from the Bible. After lunch, drive 185 km south to Bahir Dar. O/N – Tana Hotel. (B, D)

Day 8 – Bahir Dar

After breakfast, drive 32 km to the Blue Nile Falls. Here you will also see the oldest bridge built over the Blue Nile River by the Portuguese in the 1620s. Have a remarkable boat trip on Lake Tana (the largest lake in Ethiopia – 3,600 km sq) to visit the island monasteries of Ura Kidane Miheret and Azwa Mariam which are famous for their beautiful murals from the 16th Century.
