Detail Information
Day 1: Arrival in Amman

You will be met at Queen Alia Airport, assisted with all formalities, and taken to check-in at your hotel. Dinner and overnight in Amman hotel.

Day 2: Amman - Umm Qais - Ajlun Castle – Jerash - Amman

After breakfast, we visit Umm Qais, a black basalt castle which enjoys impressive views over Lake Tiberias and the Golan Heights. According to the bible, this was the spot where Jesus cast out the devil from two demoniacs (mad men) into a herd of pigs. We then drive down to Rabad Castle (Ajloun castle), used by the Islamic armies of Saladin to protect the region against the crusaders.

Our next destination will be Jerash, the Pompeii of the East. You will enter Jerash through the monumental South Gate to find an extremely well-preserved Roman city. There are a large number of striking monuments to admire: the Corinthium Column, Hadrian’s Arch, a circus/hippodrome, two immense temples (to Zeus and Artemis), an unusual oval Forum, which is surrounded by a fine colonnade, a long colonnaded street or cardo, two theatres, two baths and an almost complete circuit of city walls.

In the evening you will return to your hotel in Amman to enjoy the night-time highlights of the capital of Jordan. Dinner at your hotel or at a nice restaurant, overnight in Amman.

Day 3: Amman - Desert Castles – Amman

After breakfast you will travel east of Amman to visit the ‘Desert Castles’ built by the wealthy Umayyad Caliphs. These beautiful Castle-like Qasers (Palaces) in the heart of the Jordanian desert were used as lavish retreats from where princes, caliphs, governors and noblemen indulged in hunting, falconry, racing horses and camels, bathing and eating and poetry recitals. Most of these palaces were built in the seventh or eighth century and are decorated with fine mosaics, frescoes, stone and stucco carvings.

Qasr al-Mushatta is the largest and most richly decorated Ummayyad castle in Jordan. It offers an excellent example of characteristic Umayyad architecture. The castle is an incomplete square palace with elaborate decoration and vaulted ceilings. The immense brick walls of the complex stretch 144 metres in each direction, and at least 23 round towers were nestled along these walls.

Qusayr Amra is a UNESCO World Heritage Site, one of the best-preserved and perhaps the most charming castle in the area. It was built during the reign of the Caliph Walid I (705-715 CE) as a luxurious bath house. The building consists of three long halls with vaulted ceilings. Its plain exterior belies the beauty within: the ceilings and interior walls are covered with colourful frescoes. Directly opposite the main doorway is a fresco of the caliph sitting on his throne. On the south wall other frescoes depict six other rulers of the day. Many other frescoes in the main audience chamber offer fantastic portrayals of humans and animals.

Qasr al-Azraq is built in black basalt and has been in continuous use since Roman times. During the Arab Revolt it functioned as the headquarters of Lawrence of Arabia. The primary entrance to the castle is a single massive hinged slab of granite, which leads to a vestibule where one can see carved into the pavement the remains of a Roman board game. The caretaker of the castle has a collection of photographs of Lawrence; his father was one of the Arab officers who served with the legendary Brit.

Late in the afternoon you will be transferred to the Azraq Oasis: 12 square kilometres of lush parklands, pools and gardens. Azraq (Arabic for ‘blue’) has the only water in all of the Eastern desert and is home to a host of water buffalo and other wildlife.

Day 4: Amman - Madaba - Mount Nebo - Karak Castle – Petra

After breakfast you transfer to Madaba to visit the famous mosaic map of Jerusalem and the Holy Land. Your next stop will be Mount Nebo where, like Moses, you will be able to overlook the Holy Land and the Dead Sea. The West Bank city of Jericho is usually visible from the summit, as is Jerusalem on a very clear day.

You will continue your journey along the picturesque Kings Highway and through Wadi Mujib, the grand canyon of Jordan, before stopping at Karak for lunch. In the afternoon you will visit the huge Karak castle where Saladin and Richard Lionheart fought during the crusades. Your journey continues in air-conditioned comfort to Petra.

Day 5: Petra

In the morning a local guide will escort you into Petra and show you the highlights of this rose-red Nabatean city, rightfully voted one of the new Seven Wonders of the World. You will enter the city through the Siq and be rewarded with the most astonishing and dramatic monument in Jordan: the Treasury. You will also visit the theatre, the royal tombs and faades and the colonnaded street. You will have lunch inside Petra and climb the many stairs to the Monastery to admire the splendid view over Wadi Araba. Dinner and overnight in hotel in Petra.

Day 6: Petra - Wadi Rum

In the morning you will be transferred to Wadi Rum. You will pass the famous seven pillars of wisdom, vividly described by Lawrence of Arabia and go on to explore Wadi Rum by jeep, escorted by a Bedouin guide. You will see the house where Lawrence of Arabia lived, and be shown the inscriptions made by the Thamudic and Nabatean people many centuries ago. If you wish, you will be able to climb one of the natural rock bridges and enjoy the solitude at the top of a rock formation. You will check in at our deluxe campsite, and enjoy an authentic Bedouin BBQ. Overnight at Wadi Rum campsite.

Day 7: Wadi Rum - Aqaba

You will be transferred from Wadi Rum to Aqaba where you will be free to spend the remainder of your day doing as you please: you could dive, snorkel or simply relax on one of the beautiful sandy beaches. Perhaps you would like to take a trip on a glass boat to see the amazing coral reefs at close hand Dinner and overnight at a hotel in Aquaba.

Day 8: Aquaba - Wadi Araba - Dead Sea - Baptism – Amman

In the morning you will travel via Wadi Araba, the coastal area between Jordan and Israel, to the Dead Sea, the lowest point on earth. You will have time to float in the relaxing salt-rich waters: a ‘once in a lifetime’ experience. We will then travel to a possible site of ‘Bethany beyond the Jordan’ from where John the Baptist ministered. In the evening we transfer to Amman for dinner and overnight in hotel.

If your flight schedule allows, you will receive a guided City Tour of Amman. You will visit the Citadel, the Roman Theatre and the Suq, an atmospheric Middle Eastern market where you buy almost anything. Transfer to airport for your departure
