At the time of the Maccabean Revolt, the Hasmonaean dynasty had set up a powerful Jewish state east and west of the Jordan River. They built a number of forts to protect their territory, one of which was Machaerus in the east, another was Masada in the west. Herod the Great later captured this region, and launched an ambitious construction campaign that included a great palace at Machaerus. After Herod the Great died, Machaerus passed on to his son Herod Antipas. Evening back to Amman, check in at your hotel, dinner and overnight.

Day 4: Amman - Bethany - Dead Sea – Amman

In the morning we visit one of the most significant religious discoveries of the past century. Bethany beyond the Jordan, is situated on the east bank of the Jordan River, and is the likely place where John the Baptist lived and preached and where he baptized Jesus. We then head to Dead Sea: A unique combination of several factors makes Dead Sea's total attraction: the chemical composition of its water, the filtered sunrays and oxygen-rich air, the mineral-rich black mud along the shoreline, and the adjacent fresh water and thermal mineral springs. Although sparsely populated and serenely quiet now, the area has a historical and spiritual legacy of its own. It is believed to be the site of five biblical cities: Sodom, Gomorrah, Admah, Zebouin and Zoar. Evening back to Amman, check in at your hotel, dinner and overnight

Then we continue through the Arab Market (Suq) to the Via Dolorosa, Jesus' Way of Suffering, which leads us to The Church of the Holy Sepulcure, where according to the Christian tradition Jesus was crucified and buried.
