Athlone is a town that lies on the River Shannon near the southern extremity of Lough Ree, Ireland. Athlone, along with Mullingar and Tullamore is one of the largest towns in central Ireland and also the commercial capital of the Irish midlands. . The modern name Athlone comes from two words ‘Ath’ meaning ford or crossing and ‘Luain’ a man’s name, meaning the ford of Luain.
