Darjeeling

The hill station of Darjeeling is one of the most visited tourist destination in India. Among the hill stations of West Bengal, Darjeeling is the most favorite locale for spending holiday among the tourists. The name of the hill station Darjeeling came from the two words ‘dorje’ and ‘ling’ meaning thunderbolt and place respectively. This hill station was given as a gift to the East India Company by the then ruler of Sikkim in 1835. The district of Darjeeling is divided into three sub-divisions of Kalimpong, Darjeeling and Kurseong. The hill station of Darjeeling is situated at an altitude of about 7053 feet. The climate of this hilly area remains cold through the year. The best time to visit the hill station is from March to mid of June and during September to mid of December.

Darjeeling can be accessed by rail, road or air. The Darjeeling station is located in the Darjeeling town and the railway station of Jalpaiguri is a very important in this region. The airport of Bagdogra is the nearest airport to Darjeeling. Bus services are available from the major cities.

The tourists coming to Darjeeling, can also visit the different places of interest in and around the town of Darjeeling. The magnificent beauty of the sunrise can be enjoyed from the Tiger Hill that is situated only at a distance of 13 km from the Darjeeling town. One can also enjoy a ride in the toy train going around the city.
