Deogarh is a big pilgrimage destination in India for its famous Vaidyanath Temple. Legend has it that the ten headed Ravana prayed to Shiva to come to his kingdom in Sri Lanka and make it invincible. Shiva gave him one of the twelve Jyotirlingams in existence on the condition that if he set it on the ground it would take root immediately. The Jyotirlingam is a representation of Lord Shiva and Ravana started the trek back to his kingdom with the Jyotirlingam. Before he could reach his destination, the Gods played a trick on him and the precious Jyotirlingam was set down in Deogarh where it still stands rooted within the Vaidyanath Temple. There are several other temples dedicated to Lord Shiva in Deogarh apart from Buddhist shrines. Long distance buses from Ranchi, Hazaribagh, Bhagalpur, Jamshedpur, Gaya and other cities connect Deogarh.
