Karnala Bird Sanctuary

The Karnala Bird sanctuary is located in Raigad District of Maharashtra sprawling over a small area of 4.27 sq km. It is a dwelling of 147 species of local and 37 species of migratory birds. Karnala is situated on the Mumbai Pune highway just 10 km from Mumbai.

Karnala Bird sanctuary is 82 ft high above the sea level. Inside the bird sanctuary is the Karnala Fort which dates back to 12th century. The view of the tree line sandy beach of Mumbai is visible on a clear day from the top of the fort. The steep rocks and narrow muddy lanes through the sanctuary that leads towards the fort is a perfect destination for trekking.

The Karnala bird sanctuary has a very rich variety of flora. The dense forest of the Karnala bird sanctuary gives shelter to various types of birds like Red Vented, Bulbul, Horn Bill, Myna, Owl, and Robin Mc Pie.

The best time to visit Karnala is during winter when one can see innumerous colorful migratory birds here.

Therefore Karnala is referred as a paradise for bird lovers. It’s also an ideal destination for a one day picnic.

Nearest airport is Mumbai which is 49 km from Karnala Bird sanctuary. Nearest railway station is at Panvel, 13 km. cars and buses are also available from Mumbai.
