Zoological Gardens in Bern of Switzerland

If you want to get to know the past and present wildlife of Switzerland, then the Daehlhoelzli Animal Park or the Zoological Gardens, Bern is the right place to visit. This is one of the most beautiful tourist attractions in Bern situated between the charming River Aare and the dense Forest of Daehlhoelzli.
The Bern Zoological Gardens, spread over the area of around 16 hectares, offer a unique riverside landscape where you can see the wild animals kept in their natural habitat. Here you will find a large variety of species including various exotic mammals, colorful birds, frightening reptiles, and strange amphibians and insects. Here you will see not only a variety of European mammals like otters, musk oxen, lynx, wolfs, elks, reindeer, and ibises, but you will also find the tropical species like basilisk lizard (basiliskus plumifrons) and fire weavers. You will be overwhelmed by a large number of colorful free flying butterflies.
The vivarium is one of the main attractions in the Zoological Gardens, Bern and it is visited by a large number of tourists per year. This vivarium was started by the initiative of Dr. Bernd Schildger and it is renowned as a breeding center for various delicate and endangered species. This large vivarium houses various animal species other than the native European varieties; even representatives from as far as Madagascar are also housed here.

Entrance in most of the areas of the Zoological Gardens is free to all. There are admission charges only for the Vivarium and the adjoining area.
Getting there : You may take bus 19 from the Main Railway Station and alight at Tierpark stop and then turn right into Thormannstrasse. You will find an information board located on the edge of the woods. For guests coming by car, take the Motorway A6 Exit ‘Bern-Ostring’ in the direction of the city center (Zentrum). You will come across the first Tierpark (Zoo) signpost after approximately one km. Please note that there is limited parking space available.
Timings: The Zoological Gardens, Bern are open for 365 days a year.
In summer, the gardens are open between 8 a. m. to 4:30 p.m. and in winter, between 9 a.m. to 5 p.m.
